I'll tell you the truth - I like kids a lot, but babies make me nervous. Anyway, You're lucky that you found a wonderful mum & dad, and they are lucky that they found such a great kid. ST. Germain, Mum says only one more minute but I wanted to tell you that I saw your message the other day. I talked with Mum aobut how I just want to adopt because someone needs to wan the already children because we were them. Mum said that's not true and if you asked the Bronze they would tell you that they would all want to have you as their little girl. And she said look at me. I have funny brown red hair and freckles and a stutter. If I was waiting for a family no body would have wanted me because you're much smarter than me. And prettier. and stuff, but I laughed becaus Mum is th emost beautiful Mum ever adn she is wonderful adn every body woul dwant her once they got to know her and she said ther you see. Irene Adler - {{{{hugs}}}} from a safe distance. Here, have a Cadbury's Egg? Thoin didn't find this one. And STOP that young lady! You don't need to act out like this. Just calm down. Go relax on the couch. It will be all right.

Poesrose - Welcome to the Bronze. I haven't heard of any slayer being turned, though there has been speculation here about it. I sense unresolved issues with the WC. *g* You are not alone. But I'm kind of sleepy and gone. Have fun.

newfan - new name? Or nickname, should you wish to retain your 'maiden' name? That should be interesting.

Penlind - I still have the complete text of those posts if you get permission only after the archive is cleared. No hurry. But remember that Joss is evil, and he can make his own rules, when you speculate. *g* Buffy hasn't been able to defeat Glory by her 'normal' means, and I doubt that she can. Glory doesn't have a lot of powers, but if she can survive being dropped from a rather high point, or having a building collapse, I don't think poking and punching will cut it. Still, you are probably right about our having only one shot. After all, that's what these apocalyptic battles are all about. *g*

Reyna - newfan=turtledove? You haven't heard the story of how she brought the USPS to its knees. At least one branch of it. Makes one proud just to know her.

elreyn24 - I'm fine. I know the smell though. My parent's house burned down years ago. I was in college, but came home in time to help with some of the cleanup. I still have some smoke-stained mementos. For the people whose house burned, though, remind them that you can recover an amazing amount of stuff if you are lucky, and that if they send anything into storage to try and catalogue it. We had some items that vanished that way, because everyone was too sick at heart to list things at the time, and there was no redress. Fortunately we found a cabinetmaker who could recover water-damaged wood furniture.

Oh, I've no doubt we'll see something bigger, because there's one thing I think we've all been overlooking. We're plagued by these demonic entities of another realm, now by a god from another realm. Well, what are the entities of this world doing? The Oracles may have stood off to one side, but who else is there and are they going to leave Buffy to this bare-handed? I think things are going to escalate. They are heading out of Sunnydale, the armies of the earth are assembling, in the persons of the Knights of Byzantium and Riley's commandos, and I think we are about to meet in a place called Armageddon...

As April draws to a close, so does the Chance fundraiser.

To recap, Amber "Tara" Benson has finished filming Chance, an indie film which she wrote, directed and produced. Oh, and yes, she's the title character as well. She has no sponsors so it's time for YOU to help! The fundraiser ends technically TODAY, APRIL 30th. Thank Amber's mother, BeMu & Mabb for setting it up. Send $15 to get a EXCLUSIVE signed 8x10 glossy photo of Amber in director-mode. Anyone who sends $50+ gets the signed picture & his/her name in a "thank you" list in the final credits. All proceeds go to the making of Chance. Use paypal.com or make out check or money order to:

Benson Entertainment, Inc.

14622 Ventura Blvd.

Box #364

Sherman Oaks, CA 91403-3600

Include your name and return address. They will be keeping the mailbox open for a few more weeks so that the mail postmarked April 30th can get there. Meanwhile, Mabb reports an auction is on the horizon - more on that when it is announced to the public.

The fundraiser site: http://zengurrljen.tripod.com/chancemovie2/chance2.html

The movie info site: http://chance.Amberbenson.net

What are you waiting for? Take a Chance TODAY, April 30th!

The official fundraiser site is run by Mabb, Diane and BeMu. I am just being promoter girl. chance.Amberbenson.net is a subsite, an info source for news, plot, cast, FAQ and such. Both sites will continue to be updated through post production, shopping for distributors, the whole nine yards.

Irene quietly excuses herself to the corner of the room reserved for People Who Did Not Study Enough For Exams Because They Got Lazy And Overconfident. Being Catholic, she 'disciplines' herself a few times before vowing to run through those tedious practice problems rather than scan them before the next exam.

Anybody got any chocolate? No, no rest for the weary. I've got papers all due on the same day as the finals next month, which means I have to write them next weekend. Plus, end of the school year rapidly approacheth.

All You Greek Myth People Out There Okay, yeah, I'm impressed. But can you do this

Irene runs over to the blackboard and promptly calibrates the equilibrium concentration of acetylsalicylic acid in a polyprotic reaction, where x = [Ac-].

And the quadratic equation 0 = -b +/- (bsquared - 4ac)root /2a where axsquared + bx + c = 0

Irene sticks her tongue out at the "Greek Freaks".

/What hasn't worked? The cat fights we've been witnessing? This is a hero with super human qualities vs a god currently contained in a human body with superhuman qualities. They have not really had a fight yet, just fluffed about each other. Buffy would have gone after Glory in her usual manner...keep jabbing until you find the weak spot, but Dawn arrived. Buffy, along with the complication of her mother's illness and the knowledge that she is fighting a god, now had to keep a low profile so as not to provoke Glory and have her notice Dawn. Once she learned that Glory was a god and began to wait for the watchers council to get off their duffs, then the goal was to protect Dawn, since there isn't any seperation without the key. This is not going to work much longer, someone is going to spill the beans any day now, and then Buffy will run. She is unsure if she can defeat Glory, her friends will surely get hurt in a confrontation...the Blonde is going on the road! But, if there is a final battle, that means Glory gets her hands on Dawn. Now, the battle is their only chance at saving the world, forget the scoobies, the world. Once seperated, a new age is created where the dual diety, split into it's good and bad halves, will battle until another age begins. This is the one and only shot we have at keeping our world, the final battle.

Has she told you what the story is that she is writing about the Bronze? A 10 year old girl wanders into the chat room of her favorite fantasy TV show, and answers a daily survey, just as the Bronzers post with same regularity. Befriending the posters within, who bear an uncanny resemblance to StG, Old One, Thoin, the devestating Wolfguard, Slayerdaddy, White Wings, and many other, she begins to discuss the TV show. She answers the questions, half on knowlege, half on gut-instinct, and finds herself transported into the very world, with the very mission, that her TV show had shown. The posters are in fact gods watching for the next hero. With their help via a palm computer, she sets out on a hero's journey. She's having quite a bit of fun with it! It lets her deal with "all this stuff".

Obviously, many of them were offed by vamps. Were any of them turned? Are they lurking about somewhere in the great unknown? What would happen to the mind of a slayer turned demon (after all, Faith broke after just one accidental human death, and she's one tough slayer!)? If any of them banded together, they'd be a heckuva force to reckon with! Perhaps they'd desire revenge against the watcher's council (and wouldn't some of you like to see a battle like that?!!!). Thanks for letting me have a few wishful thoughts. Peace to y'all!

Possibly, but I stil think that the battle will be in the physical plane due to Glory's gestation. She is in a superhuman (note human) form until the rite where she will be seperated from Ben, to do that rite, you need the key, and the key is Dawn...therefore, we know for sure at least one element of the final show. By the time of the final battle, Glory has Dawn. Dawn is also in human form, so between Glory, Dawn, and the fact that a hero can't defeat a full God, something is going to happen before the rite and in physical form.

Yeah, Joss being behind this and all, I think we’re looking at something more gory and depressing than just a symbolic or psychological experience. And since a god is involved, the big battle may well take place somewhere else, the god would presumably be more powerful on her home turf.

Pardon this simple interpretation of Buffy's "gift of death," but I took it to mean that she has been gifted with mortality. She can die, and by that death be released from the tedium of immortality. "It's time to die" and "It's a good day to die" . . . these are not necessarily negative things, particularly if you've seen enough of the world -- your mind and body are prepared to die. I don't see death as negative. I can't afford to view it as a bad thing unless it arrives prematurely.
Imagine living forever. Then remember Christopher LAmbert's theme in the Highlander movies. His gift was mortality. He could finally have children and live a rich full liufe with blessings of simple things. I consider this a parallel to vampiric existance. Furthermore, I see Angel as being rewarded for his attempts at redemption with mortality! He can earn the right to return to his human condition--mortal. The gift of death.

StG...Sorry, I have to close my eyes. She is just about there, but she still wants to keep you Bronzers to herself. It is hard to be 10 and going through the things that she is facing...first crushes (Wolfguard, are you reading this?), and a very sick little brother, and I think even guilt at being happy about finding a show that you adore and people who like you and think that you are clever when Djo is sick. I would love to read what she posted, I have gotten the general gist, but from what I understand, in her mind, she was saying goodbye to Djo. If I read the postings when she has asked me not to, that would be selfish of me. It would only serve my needs, and that won't do. Cai is coming to grips with a situation that is asking so much of her, to have her mother disregard her feelings would just be too much. She has told me how she went online that day to ask what you Bronzers thought of Djo becoming a vampire, and again, all she was thinking of was defeating death at any cost. She has told me that she suggested that Old One or Wolfguard, her hero, could possibly know how to save him. Gentlemen, I am so sorry that you were put in that place. And I know that she posted a description of Djo, but that's it. She has let Simon read it, but so far, she has not allowed me. She needs time to face the grief and the pain, and Mum is always our last fort, now isn't it? The cruelest cut would be to take that from her now. I will read the posting soon, and I want to thank each and everyone of you for watching out for my baby. You are true friends!

Does he mean it? You bet, but give us a week here. If Djo can be operated on or even recieve a transplant, we will all be coming back to the states immediately. There won't be any keeping him away, family is everything to an Irishman.

tail of horror? Good grief. Tale of horror, that was supposed to be.
I think it's getting late.

Penlind - Oh, you have answered a great mystery. Why your posts are sometimes wide, and sometimes skinny, as if you were using a Mac. *g* Actually I wasn't thinking of identity so much as the fact that movies "based" on novels or history usually bear little resemblance to them. I'd love to be a fly on the wall at one of those dinners, though.

Narrator - Oh thank you. Like that bit of explanation won't give half the people here, at least yours truly, nightmares. ;-)

Reyna - Hmm. My one encounter with a rattlesnake ended with me in the hospital, and he didn't seem to be harmed at all. Unless, as has been suggested, he didn't survive the bite ...

Illinois Cid - That makes perfect sense. It sounds as though TM are good candidates for blame spreading, anyway.

newfan - Not more vicious, just more tenacious and deadly. Anyone who can conquer the USPS ... See above to Reyna. *g*

And with that, I'm going to be a good little poster and hit the hay, dreaming of B/A (*g* can't help it) episodes not being delayed.

Narrator: speaking of fun latin, my Uncle Harry gave me a peculiar tome when I was a teen, The Illustrated Anthology of Sorcery, Magic and Alchemy b Grillot de Givry. There is a talisman in it taken from the Livre de la Clavicule de Salomon, roy des Hebreux. It's legend says that "it has a virtue so great that, being armed with it, if you are atttacked by any man you shall not be hurt by him or wounded when you fight with him, and his own weapons shall turn against him." The text reads "Gladius eorum intret in corda ipsorum, et arcus eorum confringatur." ("Their sword shall enter their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.")
The talisman itself has a simple design on it, eight radial lines and hebrew letters in the Malachim script. The whole thing is eighteenth century Agrippan mysticism.

Cairo - I'll give you my ideas on why Djo is suffering. These are just my ideas, you may have
others, and that's okay. I don't know what Djoser's situation was when he joined your family, but
I can imagine, based on you other kids, that he probably didn't have anybody that loved and
cared for him. He was a sick baby, all alone. Then your mum & da came and adopted him. he
now has a family that loves him, brothers and sisters that play with him. He has everything he
didn't have before. You have been God's gift to Djoser. His body was sick when he was born,
and God may (or may not) give him healing. But God has given him something more precious.
He's given him love. Djo has had so much more with your family than he would have had if you
hadn't adopted him. And imagine - if God hadn't brought you together, he could still be sick (if
he was still alive at all) , but he'd be sick and no one would care. No one would love him or rock
him. You've given him all that. And God has given him to you. You've been each other's gifts.

Anyway, that's how I see it. You have my e-mail address if you want to write. Please give your
mum and Da a hug for me when you see them. {{{hugs}}}

Does anyone know the fresh techno beats that was played during Eliza's backflipping cartwheel deal, when she was trying out for the team. Ah, Theseus as the scared boy who gives his life, makes a journey, and returns a hero. Well then that must be Buffy. Perhaps following Glory to her dimension? Or are you thinking of one of the "mortals" as a Theseus character who will make a journey, literally or figuratively? Re: hero's journey. Well the last is certainly our dear Angel, no? And we're all waiting for him to be rewarded with humanity! Do you think Joss read his mythology? He did go to Wesleyan...*g* On a more important note...do you have pierced ears? ALSO - do you know that you can read posts going back a whole week? Go to archives to search for a specific board or just keep going down to the bottom of each board and hitting "previous posts"...that way you can catch up when convenient. We all do that, and we all post back to each other when we can - even if postees are not on the board. Just a hint :) OH - also - is Jamaica still doing well? {{{HUGS}}}

Elreyn24...Sorry again. We started a discussion last night on the hero's journey, and the four endings to it. Heroes undergo a constant repetition of the hero's rules, which end in a culmination that instigates one of 2 things...a final end or a transformation, allowing their pre-ordained directive to be altered. There are only four possible culminations, two are terminal, two are transitive. They are 1-Terminal: A-Destruction..the hero loses everything or B-The hero is Metamorphosized into an alternative entity...Like Orion. 2-Transitive: A-Transformed...the hero overcomes the enemy and is usually rewarded for having done so with a gift that benefits man or themselves. B-Ressurection...The hero gives their life in battle and is delivered back to life by the will of the gods or a concerned agent.

(Mon Apr 30 21:24:01 2001 66.72.126.132)
I am avoiding the smart people's discussions because it will just keep me awake. Just here to answer a minion question:

Amberlynne -- "Res Ipsa Loquitor" means "the thing speaks for itself". Res ipsa loquitur is a doctrine courts develop to help a plaintiff prevail in some situations where the plaintiff just can't meet his or her ordinary burden of proof. It permits an inference that the defendant was negligent when: (1) the occurrence indicates that there was negligence; (2) the instrumentality was within the defendant's exclusive control; and (3) there is no indication that the injury was the result of the plaintiff's own voluntary act or neglect. The doctrine would apply where for example, a plane falls out of the sky. There may not be enough left for the plaintiff to show exactly what happened and that the airline was actually at fault. So the doctrine kicks in, because it is a negligent event (absent a bomb, etc.), the airplane was within the control of the airline, and the crash was not the fault of the passengers. Therefore, the plaintiff (or rather his/her estate) can recover for his/her death from the likely wrongdoer.

Btw, when my nieces and nephews were little, I got them bibs that said "Mess ipsa loquitor" - the Mess Speaks for Itself. Sometimes I crack me up. 'Cause there's nothing more amusing than a funny lawyer.

Night all.

I have been thinking quite a bit about how this ends and I would like to offer my thoughts and see if anyone can tell me how close I am.:-)
If Ben and Glory share the same body in their dimension, then killing Ben should kill Glory, thus resolving the issue of killing Dawn to stop Glory from killing (or "utilizing") her (Dawn).
We further know that Willow can perform teleportation spells. Since Willow teleports her conscounceness into Buffy's in Thw Weight of the World, and that Glory performs a spell to make the humans (even Dawn and Anya,as they are now human, right?) forget this fact about the hellgods (Ben,Glory and Doc) and only Spike remembers in "Spiral",and Ben's energy jumps out of his body, and he hates Glory to begin with,if Bens energy jumps into a female Scoobee (as they are the ones with magic user ability-Willow,Tara,Anya (it is unclear but I think she retains some level from her demonic days, possibly D'hoffryn or even Giles (!) can assist her?)and the persons soul he displaces goes somewhere safe like the first slayer or something like that-or even faith ( as in the shared dream of graduation day part 2)then wouldnt killing that scobee's body (temporarily)with the soul restored later on,solve the whole mess for everybody?
Please tell me if I am right about this. I have been busting my brains about this for weeks now.

Going to stop and take a breath to make sure I don't overpost, but just had to say...

Newfan...I was thinking of Crete. Theseus travels to face a certain death (It's hard to remember the critical points because we are so familiar with the myth, but disassociate and see it with fresh eyes...Theseus knows he has almost no chance of coming out of this alive. In fact, it is that thing that kills his father. The rest of us jaded 20th c. seen it all in the movies westerners would have waited for the boat to dock, but to the Greeks, this made sense in their insulated manners...the King was positive that his son had sailed to his death. The said was a very very very long shot), descending into an underworld atmosphere, giving his life for others, and emerges transformed by his actions...scared boy to hero.

penlind — alas, no, I had a brief exposure to Greek and Latin in a Jesuit prep school I attended for a couple of years... I still retain enough Latin to get the quotations and jokes in Patrick O'Brian's novels (I highly recommend them) but the Greek is a pale and fading shadow... I work at a small press that publishes plays and theatre tech books, in addition to writing my own novels. My esteemed boss is a total Phillistine who publishes the classics because the authors are dead and you don't have to pay royalties, so I get to search out public-domain editions for reprint and prepare them for publication. I will explore Arkileus. So far my adventures in autodidactics have taken me into Euripedes, Aeschylus, Aristophanes, Sophocles, Xenophon, Herodotus — that suck-up — and others in various translations (I am currently working my way through the Anabasis because it resonates powerfully with a novel idea I am developing).

Wonderful questions!!

Slayerdaddy...Eurepides did indeed do a version for stage, as did Arkileus...have you come across him? "I have lost my shield, my best and longest, wrought with graven hands to a sure mettle, and wiped with the thighs of young maidens to a gleam, upon that bloody battlefield, I would go and find it, for if not another will keeping it as a spoil, but I will not, instead, I will live to fight again without it then risk being killed for it, for the better part of valour is discretion..." I love that, don't you just see the warrior torn at the edge of the hell he emerged from? Gilmore Girls, pah.

Anyway, he's uses the myth, but distorts the facts. Shame really, because the original myth has the best language. Slayerdaddy, what do you do? If you read Ancient Greek, let me send you a book with it and you can translate it for yourself. Are you in classical studies?

As I was saying, if they are following a hero's journey, and it' pretty clear they are, the hero, who fights death in a constant and unrelenting way, will find that acceptance of death is necessary to complete this phase of her learning. What happens when death is a must, usually to save the things that we love. Hercules is not making a completely selfless act...he knows all three of the main participants and calls them friend, a term not used lightly in Ancient Greece. He goes to face Death, literally, knowing that their is every chance he will loose. It is only because of another petty bet between three more of the gods that the fight is even allowed to happen. Hercules goes knowing he will die, but he feels that the sacrifice is worth it...one small chance that the capricious gods will want to see the outcome, and it works. The ultimate sacrifice of the hero is their own death, but in most hero cycles, when that moment comes, it is followed by four things.

Here's more: *smooch* The kids LOVE the bear (They think you sent it just for them! They fight over who gets to wash first!) and I love the rest! You are very clever...

Penlind! *BAP* You may be no Thoin ..and we can all have a moment of prayer for there being just one of her (*weg*)...but you certainly have the fertile mind and way with words! And btw, I've been meaning to tell you that when Cai posts about some words of wisdom you've imparted...it inspires me to "talk up" to my kids more. So thanks, Friend! Re: your theories: I don't remember Alcestis (sp?) but I know Theseus pretty well. Who are you comparing to Theseus? And are you considering Theseus as the bastard son of a queen who thinks his father is Poseidon, or as the questing for his real father Theseus who cleans up that road of criminals and lives as king for a year in wherever it was (*g*), or as the young prince (reunited with his real father) who volunteers to go to Crete and frees all the bull-jumpers from the Minotaur? Did that make any sense??? Or do you just mean Theseus the hero in all endeavors?

white wings: Aha! Sort of aha. I'll e you further questions so I don't embarass myself here! *g* I'm so glad you asked me about TM!!! hatethemhatethemhatethemhatethem

TicketMaster rant below...unrelated to Buffy and containing violent thoughts:

Let's start with the acknowlegement that I, like almost every human in the universe, have been screwed by TM before. This is the latest in a long line of my frustrations with them. kay? So...I've been wanting James Taylor tickets. Very badly. And I want to sit close. They were to go on sale a few weeks ago. I waited in line..TM changed the on sale date at the last moment. I waited online on the second date...same thing. They finally changed the onsale date to today at 10am. A Monday. When people work. And don't tell me I could call...no-one can get through. So I decided to go to a TM outlet. I was told to be there by 9am today for a 10am sale time. I cancelled 2 patients. I got there at 9. Another lady got there at 9:30. An employee showed at 9:45. (Me: "I was told to be here at 9." Her: "9, 9:30...it doesn't matter because we use a lottery system." Me: "It matters to me. I cancelled an appointment to wait here since 9." Her: "HUH?") Anyway, they use a lottery system to determine one's place in line for tickets. So even though I got there first, I was actually second to get tickets...because the other lady "won" the lottery. I remained calm. How bad could second be? I'll tell you how bad! She got 5th row! I (5 minutes later) got second to last row! Second to last! Way in the %^$#&^@ back! After ALL THAT WORK!!!!! I want them to die. All of them. please somebody help me make them all die!

Phew!

penlind — I worked on an edition of Alcestis (Euripedes" version? Haveta check tommorrow) where Heracles shows up after Alcestis has passed on and expects the Fête due a hero, which Admetus as a host is too dutiful to deny him. So we are treated to a drunken Herakles in his laurels trying to figure out why everyone else is so mumchance. When he finds out the truth he of course resolves to go give death a little four-wall counselling (bounce him off one wall, bounce him off the other wall) until he agrees to release Alcestis. But because Admetus has embarrassed him by not taking him into his confidence, he doesn't tell him he has rescued her but demands that the king marry a veiled woman Herakles will bring him, who of course turns out to be Alcestis. (This scene is later evoked in the climax of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing,) I see it as a great scene for Faith... or likewise with Buffy as Theseus and Faith the boisterous, flawed hero who redeems her...

Penlind, methinks you've got Alcestis and Herakles mixed up there. Buffy would be Herakles and Dawn would be Alcestis. Or one of the other Scoobies. Maybe Anya. Or Xander. That would make sense. In a way that is kind of ew, but it would, if one were Admetes and the other Alcestis, and Buffy were Herakles, it would make sense. But as I said, I don't see Joss doing a "personification" of Death. Unless Glory becomes said personification. Then it would be Xander/Anya as Admetes and Alcestis and Buffy as Herakles. Don't know WHAT role Dawn would play in that scenario.

Ah, heck with it. I know when I'm licked. My poor brain won't work and my eyeballs are made out of ground glass. I'm going to bed!!! I was supposed to work from home tonight, but dind't do ANYTHING, which means tomorrow will be SO ugly as to not be believed!!!

White Wings...They are scared of all of you. Back in early March, a few stumbled in here looking for me and they were ignored or bapped. Wolfguard was the only one who would talk to them, and that was to firmly explain the rules. Now, they lurk and break into my fun time with constant e's for discussion and chitchat. Penlind, thank you! I sort of ALMOST remember that one, but I think I only read it once as a child and then never again. And I don't see this as a current thread in Buffy. Death has NEVER been anthropomorphized in this show, which I think is a good thing. It's something to be fought, but it's not a PERSON. I like that. So no, I don't think this will be a Buffy theme for this or any other season. But a literal descent into an underworld (Herakles/Theseus) would be quite possible, even likely. It's the one Journey our Hero really hasn't taken (if you discount Anne as being in another DIMENSION rather than in Hell itself). I was working, for awhile on a Xander-centric tale called Horton Goes To Hell which was sort of like this (though not quite) and someday I really should get back to it. It was rather a fun little idea...

I think the Dawn/Buffy switch theory is certainly very interesting. Wonder if they'll run with something like that.

However, since Darla was resurrected and everything, I don't think they'd do the same again with Spike. But you never know!

newfan - I admit that I've been worse at the Antique Rose Emporium. Not too much worse, though. And I'm brooding over other things. Wildfeed? Well, the studio has to get the programs to the networks and affiliates, and they transmit it by satellite. If you've got the right kind of satellite dish and the signal isn't scrambled, you pick it up. Buffy goes out early Sunday, and Angel early Tuesday. What has Ticketmaster done to you now, and how will you make them pay for it?

Lady Wolfsbane - That's sweet of you. newfanroomie has offered to back me up, but we may from time to time BOTH need help. I'm getting prepared to be able to copy tapes. Dark times are ahead.
Oh, do you need chocolate? I've got Chocolate Cadbury's Eggs, and caramel ones, and the creme ones. Laid in a stash after Easter.

Thoin - See above to Wolfie re: chocolate. You have a rain-check pending, as I recall. *g*

Penlind - Do you have my e-addy? I'll put it above if you don't. By the way, your students could make their own contributions to the Board. *g* Refuse to answer them unless they contact you on the board with some additional content. Discussions as to the superiority of chocolate over caramel as toppings are not disallowed, if they can't come up with reasons for thinking that ________ is cute. ;-)

Amberlynne - Ah, some of these conditions are rapid onset, but can also disappear fairly suddenly. *petpetpet* They're just discussing stories, dear. Don't worry. I don't remember who Alcestis is myself. Of course, my graduate degree was in math... She is in the dictionary, but that doesn't go into detail. *g*

Reyna - Well, there's always the road down to the barn. Now that the snakes are coming out, and the chiggers will be around in another month, it is a matter of concern. I'm glad it's warm enough finally for you to think about air conditioning, sorry about the carrying.

Newfan...No, I'm just a plain old researcher. My books are the ones that are demanded for upper level classes and never read again. I'm no Thoin! You need a fertile brain and way with words for that career.

Narrator...Hey now, you run rings around me all the time.

Thoin...With you on that one endocrin. twin..I am a diabetic (T1)...been on those bloody shots since I was wee. Anyway, lets take a quick refresher because this is one of the lesser, but most beautiful, of the Thracian (Gee, aren't they all?) myths. Admetus, a king, is assigned the personal services of Apollo for a year after Apollo and some of the other gods get into a, um, manly dispute. Actions are committed in anger, blah blah blah, Apollo is punished by having to take a human form and serve Admetus. Now Admetus loves a girl named Alcestis, who is being chased by every Tom, ****, and Hercules in the district. Through Apollo's help, Admetus wins the girl, but soon falls ill. Apollo beseeches the Fates to spare his master and friend, but they say not unless someone will take his place. From his subjects and heroes to his parents, no on will step forward, until Alcestis says that she will. Admetus cries out no, but too late, as the Fates cackle happily. Admetus gets better as his wife sickens, and Apollo calls for his 1/2 brother Hercules. Told the story, and being a true hero, Herc waits at the door of the Queen and when Death arrives, holds him immobile until Death relents, agreeing to move on rather than miss other appointments. Alcestis is able to recover and everyone lives happily ever after. Boethius gives us a long version based on earlier texts in which Herc taunts Death and says that he will take Alcestis' place, if Death can break free of his wrestlers grip. The hero is willing to sacrifice himself for another.

Penlind:
Hi professor. Sorry I missed the original Q/discussion. But if we're discussing resurection myths and/or underworld walks -- (and I know this is your field, so forgive this poor newbie) but how about something like the Sumerian myth "Inanna's Descent to the Nether World" . . .? I read it a couple of months ago, looking for early archetypes for Ben/Glory stuff . . . . But it is a story of an attempt to recover a "lost" goddess disposed 7 times over of her powers. I read Kramer's old book on his translations of the clay tablets. Not my field but great stuff!

Except that ASH is supposed to be back next year. Wonder if Joss will strand him in some hell dimension from which Buffy and Co. have to try and rescue him. Periodically we see him interacting with the denizens of that realm, putting his would-be enemies to sleep with long, tiresome reasoned-out thesis and other ramblings...you think he does this 'cause he's a geek? No. It's a self-defense technique perfected from a shamen in the Orient...a way to confuse your foes by putting them to sleep. Worked for me in Fifth grade...heheheh...

SPOILERISH SPECULATION

RE: Spike moving over to Angel

I have a difficult time with seeing Spike in Angel. One reason is that if Spike is back to being evil, he would fail to defeat Angel like he did with Buffy. A one-on-one battle with Angel would always put him on the losing side. I don't think he would put up with being under the control of W&H, even less than Darla and W&H experiences with Darla would make them reluctant to use a vampire as a tool against Angel again.

Wanda's words suggest Buffy or the all the scoobies; however, Wanda may have started low herself.

Besides, "death" may mean many things. It may only be a metaphor.

Would Joss kill a character or have a character act out character simply for shock and surprise? If there are two more a seasons in the epic and we assume the final season deals with the ending transition, then what does the sixth season's tales have to tell? How do you set that season up?

Slayerdaddy, the reason I'm cringing at this thread is that Theseus HAS to be either Xander or Giles (and I'm leaning toward Xander here) just on personality and position in her life, with Buffy as Herakles (she IS the hero of the show, y'know). One problem with that idea....that's how the last season of Sailor Moon ended...before they were resurrected in the final five minutes.

Buffy decides she has lost to death too much! and takes a stand (in season six)? WOW, nice! In my theories, Buffy finds a loophole to being in control of some remnants of the power of the key and can use it to recreate Dawns' body and then Dawn and Buffy switch bodies again and return to normal and Joyce is pretty much the only one to die for real, but I guess they could all die and Buffy saves them? But that seems a bit of a stretch, but with Joss anything is possible... Maybe he has something completely different than any of us thinks! that could be nice! =) heheh

Rather than see Anne Robinson say that American game show contestants are the most brainless in the world, I'll tackle Wolfguard's survey...
Angel wouldn't make it if it wasn't a Buffy spinoff because it's been done before, as Forever Knight, Dark Shadows and Kindred. The fact that it's a spinoff gave it a chance to live
1. As we know, he left to save Buffy. He thinks their love will kill them both, since it nearly did in "Becoming". He sees no future for them and their love.
2. Doyle told Angel to keep away from temptation (i.e., bloodlust), and try to connect with his fellow living man.
3. Angel succeeded in that in organizing a group that helps the helpless
4. the moving moving scene was Doyle sacrifing his life for people he didn't know. He was an example for Angel to follow. "IWRY" is a close second.
5. What was resolved is that Angel is now certain he has a purpose which is to fight evil as best he can, and that maybe he will be rewarded with redemption. The unresolved part is Darla...
6. who represents Angel's part of homicidal fun and murder, with a song in his heart. The fact that she's there shows he's capable of relapsing big time, threatening any hope of salvation
7. The most moving scene from this season was Angel savinf kate a few seconds after his epiphany. I'm probably wrong here
8. The Host's deal? Maybe he's also a demon who wants to repent by helping others through Caritas. His song? Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive", or Queen's "Somebody to Love"
9. What is the deal with W and H, and do they expect Angel to be their next Employee of the Apocalypse, betraying mankind for the most frivilious of reasons?
10. How about another mysterious man in black who's as cool as Angel? Some suggested splitting Angel in two, where the good side battles the bad side...but this wouldn't work for an entire season. Maybe six episodes tops.

Convenience reposting

Penlind - You have mail. I got your second e. Nothing from Caro yet. Also - do you know how to use the search function to look for posts directed to you? If you hit Ctrl-F and put your name in the box, then hit enter, you can find anything with your name in it. Did Cai ever let you read her post?

Penlind, slayerdaddy, Thoin, et al -- You folks are going to discuss "the possibility of Joss following the Herakles/Theseus or Heracles/Alcestis myths, with the hero/ine descending into the underworld to rescue/be rescued...?"?

Golly, does this place come with CliffNotes?

I mean, I need a dictionary just for the words.

Sorry everybody, my grad students have learned to lurk here so that I can't avoid them. One was watching for me and I had to help him quickly. Back now I promise...any more of you out there just shoo! Regular office hours are being observed. Drink your coffees in silence and let me talk with my friends.

Cashmere...Thank you. I wasn't sure what we were doing wrong, so I'm very glad to hear that it wasn't serious.

Thoin...You are a rabble rouser. My Mum warned me of your sort.

Reyna...Thank goodness, I felt terrible!

Newfan...Are you here tonight?

White Wings...I have to e you about something that is happening again. I am e-ing StG in a moment, in case my other one didn't get through, and I will bring you in on this also.

maryloye — You know the guy who sat behind Tom Cruise in "Top Gun"? The guy who everyone in the audience said, "Oh, s**t, he's dead," when his wife Meg Ryan and his adorable little kid came running off the airplane? That's a "sympathy frag." "frag," BTW is an old army term denoting a rather thorough way enlisted line doggies used to express a vote of no-confidence in their officers...

And you want thinking bigger?

Vote for James... cause it's mindless and funny!

Sarah's carl
I like his smile. Dear lord, even my mother adores his smile. She sighs at him on commercials, and all in all it's very disturbing. But, trust me... I'm not that far gone.... he is so not my type, all cheerful and sappy charming on the screen... *shiver*. He's the anti-bad boy.

If Spike does die in Buffy as rumored at the end of season five, what are the chances that Wolfram & Hart will use the very box they used to Resurrect Darla to resurrect a human Spike? And if Drusilla or Darla re-sire him and he becomes Angels' season three "big bad" how would you feel about it?

Are you saying that in the end the Scoobies will run away and leave Buffy to die!? I guess if Tara, Spike, and Giles get hurt that might happen, what about Xander and Anya?? I don't see them running away, well Anya would, but not Giles!! (Unless Anya is pregnant) Giles seems most likely to die, because we need a new Watcher so we can see more of the Watchers Counsel! I will miss Giles, but understand. Willow running off might be her reliving her Mothers' life, remember in Gingerbread, her mom was in denile! Well Willow has been close with Mom since Joyces' death, so maybe she will be the coward in denile in the end with a wounded Tara... (survival instinct) Buffy would fight all alone to protect Dawn, but still even then I think Buffy would still insist on taking over Dawns' body to use the Dagonsphere to defeat Glory, and the Scoobies may run, but not far! They believe in Buffy! So do I! And I have no faith in Dawns' ability to use her power, its all up to Buffy! (IMHO)

SPOILERS

Little Willow: Nice roundup! LMAO! As far as the exotic pets thing goes, what if Spoilers here---->tara the vegitable asks Willow if they can have a pet party and bring Amy and MKF and Anya gets all excited and gets a dog or something<-----Spoilers there =) I think the misadventures of MKF could be integrated with the spoiler a few lines up and Amy could have voice overs too!! =) hehe, how cool that would be!!! Your brain must be removed and studied by the worlds top scientits!! (joking, its perfect where it is!)

Sephiroth: Hey! Sorry about taking so long to get back to you! I have been in analyze mode all day! as you may have noticed! heh, hope you feel better too!!! Have some chicken soup, it works!

Azaria C. : That is my feeling exactly!! I don't believe Spike is good at all! its a temporary thing at best! =)

Dianne: Great observation!! I forgot that the Judge said that to Dru and Spike!! hhmm, interesting explanation right there for Season Five Spike... nuff said! =) Thanks!!

maryloye: I like that Wanda quote - "whoever you think it is, think bigger"!!! That supports my theory that SPOILERISH HERE---->Buffy and Dawn might switch bodies and Buffy may die in Dawns' body!<------ENd SPOILERS... It certainly is a bigger death than having one of them die! its got a bonus! =/ heh
