So basically WITT is the extended version of when we post something like "Sephiroth barges into the Bronze and looks around for janni, but doesn't see her so he leaves." right? I always thought that was just something to describe a little more in depth about what you're feeling at the moment or something. I never knew there was a game made out of it!

WITT ETIQUETTE says:
(Sat May 5 23:52:40 2001 24.4.254.107)
ITALICS ETIQUETTE

What you are about to witness is what we call WITT (which stands for Whedon Improvisational Theatre Troupe) or Italics Theater. This means when you read a post in italics, the person is describing actions as though they are happening. Usually one or two people start something (a game of Calvinball, and invasion, a funeral) and other people join in. Sometimes there is a specific goal for a WITT (the recent Thanksgiving Day Parade), sometimes it's just spontaneous (Calvinball). Italics theater is open to everyone. Anyone can participate in an italics theater/game/whatever. The point of WITTs is to have fun and be creative and keep the game going. Thinking on your feet and adapting to changes in the game is crucial.

Following are a few pointers regarding participation:

--SCROLL!!! For the love of Joss, scroll. The importance of this cannot be emphasized enough. If you want to participate and actually be recognized as participating, YOU MUST SCROLL the previous events. Nothing is more aggravating for the players than to have someone walk in and start announcing events or actions that contradict established plot. If you do start posting things that contradict the story, you will be ignored.

- Do not end the show! Anyone can participate, but it is bad form for a person to come in and try to end the game/show/whatever themselves. The only person who should end the WITT is the person who started it, unless they publically give up that option. In other words, if the point of the WITT is to catch the Golden Snitch, don't post "GenericBronzer swoops in and catches the Snitch thereby ending the game." The point is to keep the action going by being as creative as possible until the person who started it decides to conclude. The best WITTs leave openings for other people to react and work off what you do. This also means that you cannot kill another participant without his/her/its express permission. Maiming is okay, but you can't actually cause death. Tangents are a perfect way to get involved without mucking up other people's plot lines.

--Side note about Calvinball games: the purpose of Calvinball is to not just score as many points as possible, but to a) be creative and b) make up the craziest rules you can think of. A tip for new folks, if you don't know what Calvinball is from the comic strip, don't get involved. You'll be lost.

- Do not drag innocent bystanders into the WITT. This is a purely voluntary game. It is not acceptable to force other people into a WITT by writing them in. Only Bronzers who are already participating (or your very closest friends who you know won't mind) can be affected. All celebrities, historical and public figures, fictional characters and/or creatures and sundry inanimate objects are fair game.

- You cannot ignore the actions of others. If you join in, you have to accept that other people can then do stuff to you. Obviously, people are writing posts at the same time and all actions may not be accounted for. However, any major developments should be recognized unless they are beyond reasonable (i.e., something that ends the game, puts another active player out of commission, etc.). In other words, if you start running across the Bronze to tackle GenericBronzer and that person then posts that you fall into a vat of Jello, you have to accept that and write yourself out of that situation. Just laughing and saying "You missed me" will result in punishment.

- This is a family board. While there are many discussions pertaining to the show, and other things, that have adult content in them, this is still a family board. That means we try to keep the fun on a family level and avoid obscene content during WITTs. Suggestive is okay, but nothing graphic.

- What happens if I ignore these rules and do my own thing? Well, we'll label you a bezoar and a spoilsport. Often we will react in kind and might tie you to a tree outside a convent (if you're lucky.) Mostly we will ignore anything you say and continue to play as if you are not there.

(this is for regular WITT that is taking place across all boards and involves numerous people so this may not apply)

slayerdaddy -- Hey, I would not have blow up the candle, or whatever happened to it. BUT neither would I have ever posted it. Just as I understand that you and others can feel that blowing it up was intolerant behavior, I can also understand that the person who did that and others can feel that posting the candle was intolerant behavior.

If it's a WITT (and again, I really have come to doubt it), then the unique nature of this particular WITT is that everyone on the board at the time is dragged into it. And since, no permission was sought or given, they are free to blow it up. If it's not a WITT, it's a comment about the board. And, it invites an in-kind response. I wouldn't have responded that way, if at all, but I think a fair argument can be made that the response was invited.

Finally, since we are talking about candles and all, I want to say that I have no flames for you, Margot, Monique, StGermain, et al who posted concerning Penlind, Cairo, etal. I respect your opinion on the matter greatly, as I respect theirs.

First off, I figgered out Act II. I'm soooo happy I can't begin to describe it. Writer's Block sucks!

Now...

Let me be blunt.

Repeatedly in the past, people complained that they got dragged into the 5th WITT without their consent. It's pissed a lot of people off. I myself made a lot of posts saying "knock it off, it's not polite to involve somone in WITT when they don't want to play." Eventually that objectionable behavior got toned down, but it took a while. There's some outstanding hostility over this.

Tonight Allyson who is, by her own admission, having a spectacularly bad day (er-possibly week) crashed into Irene Adler's "WITT" (not sure that qualifies but whatever) Personally I think her actions were a bit much, plus they go against the accepted guidelines for WITT ("Do not end the show"). I do however understand the underlying concern, which is stifling people when they start getting heated in a discussion.

Well guess what? There is a very simple and much less problematic response to both. IGNORE IT.

Someone drags you into a WITT against your will, object and then carry on as if it didn't happen. We do the same thing when people post inappropriate stuff during a full blown WITT. We ignore it and carry on.

And if you feel someone is suggesting you should stop speaking your opinions because your mad and causing "tension in the Bronze" IGNORE IT. No one here can force anyone to stop talking unfortunately Generally, if I'm upset enough to have more to say, I just say it. If people don't like contention, you are so in the wrong place.

and I'm gonna post the totally unofficial WITT guidelines so we all get a refresher....

However, you may be satisfied by what I have posted so far.

slayerdaddy -- Actually, I know that history. I don't scroll as often as I'd like (I don't know why my life decided to get busy again, but there it is), but I seem to run into the whole Bronze Flame thing quite often when I do. I've never claimed my timing is of the best. <G> And I stand by my comments -- people are gonna do what people are gonna do, and one person's opinion that things are "tense" does not mean diddly. I've heard people decry the "tension" in the Bronze when all that was happening was a lively debate about the nature of the soul in the Jossverse. My take (and I fully agree it's my personal opinion, and worth exactly what weight anyone cares to assign to it) is that if someone isn't happy with the atmosphere in the Bronze, s/he should either say so straight out or do something active to change it, as Narrator suggests.

As far as the WITT thing tonight -- isn't someone adding her/his own actions participation, even if those actions aren't what the person who started the WITT had in mind? It has been so since I started lurking here early in season 2, anyway. As with any improvisational theater, you have to be prepared to deal with whatever happens once you've started. A group of actor friends used to have improv exercises in their homes. One day one of the exercises took a turn in which the only reasonable action for one of the guys was to jump out the window. So he did. Fortunately the bushes below the second story window broke his fall. He didn't set up the exercise so he would have to do that, but he dealt with wherer the others took it. (And for all that, the other moral of that story is, it's bad improvisational manners to say "No," so yes, folks shouldn't go into another WITT with the intention of kicking it to flinders, either -- On the other other hand, from a viewer's standpoint, if I get to choose between a pithy scene and a sentimental scene, I'll go with pith every time, so I'm torn about tonight. ;->)

Narrator — Either it's a WITT and you should leave it alone unless someone drags you into it — (who? when?) — or it's part of someone's personal posting and none of any other Bronzer's business unless it's directed at them. Either way, we saw some intolerant behavior in here tonite on top of an already stressful situation and I have to think that was inappropriate.

And on that cheerful note, whup awaits CTD... nite all!

Well, of course, I drop a tag.

slayerdaddy -- I believe that I posted that I thought blowing up someone's WITT was not OK. If not, then let me say that now. BUT it is also not ok to drag folks into a WITT without their permission. To the extent that lighting the Bronze Flame is a WITT (and I am beginning to question that), permission was not sought before hand. (If it makes no sense to ask for permission to light the flame then perhaps it's really not a WITT after all.) Having brought folks into a WITT without their consent, the person starting it cannot, IMO, fairly complain when it gets terminated like that.

Each of us is entitled to express our opinions, including that the place needs to "lighten up." But, as someone said earlier the flame seems to be an inappropriate "passive-aggressive" thing. IMO, it acerbates the problem.

Apparently it's not a rule, because in the past, when people tried to say that something is a rule -- such as not beating the crap out of someone to get a fifth, or not posting for positions, or not posting about "the game" on boards outside of the last one of the day -- they were soundly ignored, and the behavior continued anyway. If people want to ignore requests that behavior be stopped, they shouldn't rise up in dismay when they get the same thing back at 'em.

Well anyways I think that if we try hard anough at it, that this place can only have one inevitable problem (bezoars) and that's it. Nobody needs to be setting the board aflame with Flame wars, nobody needs to overpost just to win an arguement, and certainly nobody needs to resort to turning into a bezoar just to prove a point! Please email me so we can talk off the board.

Kristen says:
(Sat May 5 23:21:04 2001 66.27.253.160)
slayerdaddy About a year or so ago, there was a girl who started posting here on the PB. She claimed that her mother had fallen into a coma and she was trying to care for her baby sister, who was only a few months/weeks old. There was an immediate outpouring of support and offers of assistance to this girl. Over the next few weeks, she would stop by the board frequently and talk about all the things that were going on in her life. Eventually, the stories became more and more fantastic and, yes, more unbelieveable. Many Bronzers began to doubt the validity of her claims. A Bronzer, who had been one of her biggest supporters, finally decided to verify her story. And found it was all just a giant lie. A big hoax contrived to garner sympathy and attention. People felt duped and used. They had trusted her and cared about what was happening to her and none of it was true.

Unfortunately, the internet is filled with this sort of thing. People go into grief forums and post about losing loved ones they never had. Other people pretend to have terminal illnesses in support forums. It's so widespread that they've even coined a term for it now, Munchausen by Internet.

You ask, why? I ask, why not? People in online communities, such as this one, want to trust their fellow posters. Perhaps they shouldn't. But if they do open their hearts and then later feel that their trust has been abused, I can't blame them for being upset and wanting to know the truth. People don't like to be duped. It tends to make them ornery.

Sephiroth: Scroll on my name, read my earlier post, and it will make sense. Regarding what you said to Slayerdaddy about there being no need to investigate Penlind and not understanding why anyone would (and, StG where you and I differ on whose place it is to do what). . .

If this is indeed a hoax, then it is NOT a harmless prank that isn't hurting anyone. At the very least, it was engaging people in a deep and emotional level with a malicious prankster, IF it was a hoax.

So, those of us who have been around awhile, and have seen people get hurt over stuff like this, and don't want our Bronzer friends to get hurt independently, and not knowing of each other's suspicions tried to verify the few facts we had.

Most of us were actually hoping that we would find our fears were unfounded, that we were being idiotic and small minded, and that this incredible story was the miracle it purported to be.

If our research had proved our suspicions unwarranted, we would not have needed to burden an already stressed family with uncomfortable questions about their veracity. We could have turned our energies to wholeheartedly giving Penlind and her family whatever support they required.

We all know that anyone can pretend to be anything they want in cyberspace. So, when I make the claims about who and what I am, I stand behind them. I offer proof. I understand and am not offended when someone asks for proof, and I sure don't mind if people got to other sources to verify if what I'm saying is the real deal.

And, if I say something in a public forum, then I expect what I say is fair game for challanage or investigation. Penlind said quite a lot of things in a public forum. I, for one, found some of them very questionable. I did what I could to verify my information, to make sure I had my facts straight, before I said anything to anyone. When I couldnt' get the information verified, then I gave some other Bronzers a heads up.

The rest is history.

malista — A little bit of historical clarification here: The Bronze Flame was lit here after a particularly nasty multiday crapfest. We don't have constant purifcation rituals around here; IreneAdler checks the Flame when she comes in as a statement of her belief that the Bronze can be a place for peaceful engagement. She occasionally advises that she is ready to conduct another ceremony on occasions when things seem to be getting tense; that's her way of suggestion that folks lighten up and it's her legitimate opinion...

The other thing that concerns me is that tonite, following the actions of anonymous bezoar, we seem to have tossed aside the rule as I understood it that people are supposed to leave each other's WITTs alone if they're not participating. Or is that a rule for only certain Bronzers, while others are exempt?

promising an autographed copy of

But, when i received requests on

is all possible, everyone. And.
There is NOTHING wrong with
keeping your guard up in these
situations. I am glad that
Margot is looking into it.
I think, that given the
circumstances, Penlind
should expect some need for
conformation, we've given enough
of our souls over, already,
unquestioningly, and while she
owes us NOTHING for that, before
we move any further in our
involvement, we should at least
be able to confirm the situation,
if for no other reason, than so
we can help in some way, no
matter what the end result turns
out to be.

I mean, when you boil it down,
most of us are accounted for, in
some way. Polgara has my
house keys and parent's phone
number in case of emergencies,
for crying out loud. Eventually,

Seeing as how I'm about to get hit by a bad storm, I'll make this brief!
ducky, Narrator- hiya! Long time no post! I've just been lurking and posting infrequently till a few weeks ago- I had a family crisis that took literally all my time, and the aftermath took all my emotional strength to deal with..
Margot- I don't mean to fan the fire- all I know is that I have been watching for the posts regarding this family, and holding good thoughts for them.. If we are being fooled, so be it.. but I hope not- and no matter what, it still speaks well of Bronzers as a whole that we give our hearts. I have admittedly not been up to speed, and have no knowledge of the past day's developments- I have been too busy dealing with loss to really read the Board totally.. all rhetoric aside, until it's been proven to me that this is a hoax, I will continue to hold good thoughts.
I seem to be in the midst of serious lightning, so will shut down now..

Amberlynne - I agree that I should stay out of this, and there's some other things I'd rather not get mixed up in, and all of it together is just too much to stay away from, so I'll be away from it all for a while. I've asked a friend to email me when it's okay to come back, so I just felt like telling you I'm intentionally gone for now. But I might just lurk once here and there so if you need to let me know about something go ahead =)

Hmmm do I sound dillusionary? Not to me, as always =)

Monique -- That was a great affirmation of Bronzers, whatever their stance on this particular issue. I see much care for others here. I always have. It's one of the reasons I never quite leave, no matterhow busy the rest of my life gets. You are very wise.

Narrator -- I agree about the notion that the Bronze needs "cleansing" every time there is agita -- or even strong opinions expressed. This has always been a passionate place, and with much less of the gratuitous flaming and general nastiness of other sites that can also lay claims to being passionate. I don't think we need cleansing, I think we need to deal with the fact that people don't always agree, and sometimes they disagree loudly, and it's part of human interaction. Hauling out the rituals whenever the ritual performer feels things are "too tense" is tantamount to telling people to stop expressing their opinions. I don't appreciate it even though I'm rarely involved in the loud discussions myself. It feels like being slapped in the face, albeit with a cloud of incense rather than a hand.

I mean a story is a story, and whether it's true or not, it'll be true to us and the people who told it to us. There's something here I just don't seem to be getting — why?

What actually required investigating here? Someone came on the board, asked some intelligent questions, brought along a fascinating family, provoked us into acting with charity and compassion, so Bronzers felt obliged to leap into action and get the dirt? To what end? Without hurting anybody? How could it even be imagined that would be the case given the situation that was being "investigated? " What was the justification for this action? What made anybody think they were entitled to undertake it? What would have been the point or the benefit?

ducky -- I'm not defending the tearing down of someone's WITT. But I am tired of seeing WITTs used in this manner. But, there are major differences between the Fount of Employment and the other WITTs you mention. First, Leather Jacket does not go around putting people in it without being asked. He doesn't start the WITT; the person looking for a job does. Second, it is not "played" every day and unless asked, he doesn't post about as a rule. So, we can go weeks without it ever being mentioned. Third, the Fount of Employment is not intended to address/criticize/remedy the tone/spirit/mood/atmosphere of the Bronze. If people are having an argument, then they are. Join in or stay out. But this kind of commentary, however well meaning, seems to me to have the effect of insulting and incendiary. If someone thinks the tone/spirit/mood/atmosphere could be improved, then he or she should improve it. Start a topic. Change the subject. Heck, play CalvinBall. Do something, don't just comment upon it.

On my way out I will say this:I am the someone that Margot mentions who contacted Penlind and Clancy. Not with accusations or to warn them, but to allow her the opportunity to respond to accusations that I saw as being made behind her back to a group of people she considered friends. I take Margot's word for it that she had the most benign motives in doing this. However, as I've told her earlier, I would've done things much differently. So I did. I told Penlind and Clancy that there were a handful of posters who had doubts whether they were real. I didn't ask Penlind for verafiable information, because I would be offended if a friend asked me to "verify" that I was a 39 year old woman who is unemployed at present and has five dogs and two cats. I wouldn't want to have to provide the name of my vets to verify my animals existance. Penlind's response was what you saw on the board. She did provide me with some extra information, personal stuff, which I didn't need to believe she is a real person. What you believe is up to you. It is not my place to try to convince you either way.

Narrator Uh...no, I wasn't saying that everyone should embrace everyone else's WITTs. I could probably find eight or ten people that find my "cleaning lady" WITTs annoying, too. I just think it was funny that someone jumped out of an imaginary fount of employment to extinguish an imaginary candle. I would think it was equally funny if someone took an imaginary sledge hammer to my imaginary Bronze Mobile Cleaning Unit. Like Allyson said, one good WITT deserves another, and another imaginary thing can be created ad infinitum. Unless, of course, the creator runs out of imagination. My point being yes, I had a point in here somewhere, I'm sure of it it's just a WITT. I've seen someone jump in or out of the Fount of Employment just about every day around here. I don't believe in the Fount of Employment, but I didn't come in and drain it just because I found it annoying. I've seen a lot of the Cleansing Ritual and Light the Bronze Candle Rituals, too, but I didn't come in and blow out the candles or tear off anyone's robes just because I found it annoying. It's just a WITT that someone else posted for whatever reason. I don't have to embrace it, but I don't have to willfully tear it down, either.

Thoin, Kristen, DarkLady Thanks for the additional info about the dingoes. I may think twice before actually obtaining one as a pet and I will have nightmares about the dents in Thoin's brain.

Here's what needs to be done...They give Faith the electric chair and upon doing so, a new slayer arrives. This would help fight Faith, and what they could try doing was somehow kill and bring back this slayer back to life. This way you have a ton of slayers ready to fight some butt on Glory, and you could even make some of those robots like they did to Buffy just to solely be able to fight really good. A million slayers and a million slayer robots...good idea?! LOL!

Allyson: I'm with you on the mud thing. I hope no one decides to cleanse this post. But, they are free to burn it to bits.

Monique: Thank you.

As another Margo once said, "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride."

4paws: You want proof? I don't blame you. I may have it, in a few more days.

To those who want to flame someone because Penlind left: Aim your flame-throwers right here. I promise to hold still and not flame back. I have a damned high tolerance for heat.

I am preparing a detailed list of my reasons for believing that this was a hoax, for taking steps to investigate my beliefs, for emailing a small group of Bronzers I've known for a long time with my concerns after I investigated, and asking the Bronzers to keep it to themselves. (I even asked them if they could allay my suspicions.) I will email the list, when it is ready, to anyone who wants it. Unless you all demand I post it here, where everyone can see. I think that would only make an ugly situation worse, but I'll do it, if that's what the Bronze wants.

A few of those I emailed reaffirmed their belief in Penlind. But several came forward with their own reasons for suspicion. In the past 24 hours, I've received tons of email and aim with info about things that don't make sense, add up, or that sound "off" to people whose areas of expertise are different from my own. I did not want to confront Penlind, because, if she's for real, the last thing in the world she needs is to know that people think she isn't. And, ten minutes ago, I learned I'm not even the first Bronzer to quietly investigate things, because they wanted to make sure they had their facts straight before confronting her.

Or, at least, I thought I was being quiet.

Someone I contacted, whom I did not realize had become close to Penlind and her family, decided to approach the family with the info that a few folks had questions, and ask for anything they could tell us that would soothe people's doubts.

Seemingly, this motivated Penlind to leave.

Starting a flame war in the Bronze was one of two things I was trying to prevent. The other thing I was trying to prevent was causing more pain to a family that already had a lot of it. If they were for real.

Too late for that.

The only thing I can do now is present the reasons I had for doing what I did, and leave it to each of you to decide how you feel about it.

Kristen, you're right, they didn't start out as pets. But pets they became. I remember the Dingo Appreciation Socity or the Society for the Preservation of Dingoes or some such thing. And I remember Bronzers with their own flock of dingoes they kept as pets. When I first came to the Bronze I was even more of a yutz than I am now and kept doing everything wrong. At one point I posted that my brain had fallen out of my left ear and rolled away. Another Bronzer kindly returned it to me, but I noted that it had been dented. There was a dingo tooth-mark in it. For some time thereafter, I confronted Bronzers with their own dingoes and had them compare the toothmark in my brain to their dingo's teeth. No culprit, alas, was ever found. Which is why I have mixed emotions toward the dear, darling demented dingoes dancing in the corner. They're usefull little buggers, but I don't entirely trust them. But believe me, at one time they WERE kept as pets. The practice died out, however and now they're all just homeless dancing dingoes. Except for Lurker here...pats her dingoes head again, which confuses it, as it's not used to all this attention in one night...

Allyson The way I figure it, one person's WITT is another person's....thing that really annoys them. (Okay, I couldn't think of a really good word there) Actually, I thought it was kind of funny that you stepped out of the imaginary Fount of Employment to douse out the imaginary Candle. Then again, I also find my many imaginary cleaning devices funny. Anyway, I rarely rant, and don't like much to be confrontational. What I was trying to say is that, while I don't believe it was some kind of hoax, even if it was, it was good to know that people participated in something positive for someone else. I didn't see anyone cleansing your posts. I thought only Apollo could do that?

Irene Adler Good thing, cause my tape measure is broken, so the fittings would have gone badly.

Thoin Well, you know, I have these two little birdies. If I get a dingo, I wouldn't want to have to say Dingoes Ate My Birdies. Then again, knowing Fabio and Nutbird, they would probably teach my dingo to make long distance telephone calls....

Thoin, ducky Actually no, dingoes didn't start out as pets. They were those annoying, pesky creatures who hung around the board and ate large chunks of posts. Sometimes they noshed on entire posts. At some point, some Bronzers decided the dingoes were poor, misunderstood creatures and decided to try and rehabilitate them...or something.

OK. For those of you just joining us.

To recap, no one came to the Bronze in a great cloud of thunder and doom, declaring that this was all a hoax.

But yes, some people have wondered.

Some people have whispered to each other privately that there were inconsistincies in the posts. But no one persecuted them here. Because as far as I'm aware, there is no definitive proof, no smoking gun. And if Penlind is telling the truth, no one wanted to put her through the ensuing Bronze drama unnecessarily.

There are people who respond with unwavering support and trust when confronted with issues like these. To be honest, I wish I was one of those people. I really do.

There are others who have dealt with hoaxes before and are more hesitant to put their faith in people. Who dig into things before believing what they're told on blind faith. No one's saying any Bronzers who believe in Penlind and the moments of silence have done wrong. But you know what? The people who have done some doublechecking, who don't want to see their friends played, aren't in the wrong either. Both sides are reacting out of care and concern for their friends.

So IN MY OPINION, and who knows what that's worth, there is no reason to be disgusted. No one is wrong. Because everyone I've seen and heard of who've responded to this has reacted with concern on some level for someone.

ducky One good WITT
deserves another, my friend. No
matter what we do to the candle,
they'll keep pulling more out of
their collective, well, you know.

It's no disrespect to
Thoin, or Irene the
non-confronatational Adler
,
really, it just annoys me to no
end when EVERY TIME there is a
debate in the Bronze, there's
some kind of WITT ceremony to
clean the place up, like
debating, arguing, or venting is
something dirty to be
cleansed. And since when do we
have a candle, or a cleansing
ritual? You know what?
LJ doesn't walk up to the
unemployed and throw them in the
Fount, against their will for
crying out loud. DONT CLEANSE MY
POSTS. THAT is disrespectful.

Yeah, some crappy things are
going down in the Bronze. What
ever is the resolution, Bronzers
acted with love and compassion,
giving another human being the
benefit of the doubt. We don't
know what is happening. Could be
a lonely person, could be real,
could be MP, we don't know. Or,
as slayerdaddy pointed
out, a cruel experiment. No
matter what, Bronzers re-acted
with an amazing amount of heart.
We don't need to light freakin
WITT candles for that. We never
have before.

These Priestess posts about
cleansing rituals and candle
lighting are the ultimate passive
aggressive way of saying, "i
don't like what you said, so, I'm
going to not post that to you,
and instead, I'm going to light a
WITT candle in holier-than-thou
fashion. It ticks me off. It's
annoying when people can dish out
a WITT, but can't take one.
Sheesh.

Ducky, once upon a long ago, when the Bronze was first started, dingoes were the cherished pets of Bronzers. But over time, they were...well...abandoned. They live here in the Bronze now, subsisting on scraps and loose tags and what Liv-A-Snaps I toss 'em on my way out the door. They tend to mill about over in that corner...see all the dancing dingoes over there? Just find one that looks right to you, name it and take it with you. That's how I got ol' Lurker here...pats the head of the faithful, though very quiet, dingo...I don't let him go out and bite anyone much. He's for defending the Bronze and Bronzers, but I haven't seen a case where his fangs would do better than our tried-and-true methods, so he just kind of hangs out with me and plays with the Fifths (he even gives them rides on his back. Pretty nice for a dingo...they have SUCH a bad rep where small, young creatures are concerned.)

Find yourself a dingo and see what fun they can be!

Nudging a hidden panel in the floorboards, Claris opens the revealed compartment & pulls out the rocket launcher borrowed from the Refugee camp. Taking aim, she squeezes the trigger, and sends the flaming projectile out across the Bronze, straight for the Debate Podium. Getting its target dead on, the missile detonates, sending shards of wood everywhere.

Slightly satisfied, Claris sits down next to Allyson, taking the offered stick and eating the marshmellow on it.

"Well," Claris remarked, "that gives us at least 10 minutes of peace until they build a new one."

Frankly, I'm proud of the way the Bronze as a whole has acted over this; it was an experience I wouldn't have wanted to miss even at its most intense — which I remind everyone is still only a fraction of what Penlind and her family must be feeling at this time — and I would do it again.

The absolute worst case scenario anyone can envision here is that we as a group behaved well while an individual behaved badly. I'll take that. If it turns out to be a fraud, or a bizarre class project — and I do not believe it will — that doesn't change. Just spell my name right in the thesis.

And if anyone wants to be bitter, or cynical, or sarcastic about it, that's their personal call. Every bell curve needs a low end to balance the graph. Now on with the Bronze,

Thoin begins lashing brooms to dancing dingo tails, then scatters a large box of Liv-A-Snaps around the far corners of the Lurkage before turning the horde of dingoes loose within to scamper and snarf and clean as best they can...

There you go! It should be all clean in a jiffy!

Irene Adler, 's o.k. {{{HUGGLES}}} It's just a WEIRD night, tonight.

slayerdaddy I will have my pathetic part ready tomorrow. I will do it BEFORE my homework.

ducky I respect that you are not comfortable with the role I have chosen for myself. And I don't wish to be considered the "high priestess" of anything--just a local parish elder for those who would have me.

But I believe in the Spirit of the Bronze, and I have seen it work. I believe that Penlind is 100% real. And I believe that I have never seen more positive energy than I witnessed yesterday.

the Flame is how I choose to describe this energy, and I would protect it. I don't speak for anybody. Or everybody.

genrefan, The poll is not necessarily a joke. It was that one year. As to People, Sarah does not really get much attention. Four years of Buffy and her engagement gives her a square on the cover and one page story and a full page photo. Sarah does get attention in Entertainment Weekly.

Irene Adler "The Project" continues, BTW... How ya doin'?

Thoin — The shrub just watched his Congressional majority dry up and blow away in the next election after that fetus resolution; getting booted off a human rights commission that also seats Cuba, China and the flipping Sudan is pretty much a Groucho joke ("I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member"); corporate oligarchs have been with us always but see item one above, and we are still a pluralistic society because while all those suited dirtbags may hold themselves above us they still haven't got us admitting they deserve it...

wolfguard — According to Hollywood union agreements, there are no cavemen above-the-line... therefore the benefit of the doubt says he's doing it on purpose...

(Sat May 5 21:06:24 2001 207.54.186.91)
ducky enters the Bronze after much scrollage. She turns on the Bronze Mobile Cleaning Unit for the sole purpose of annoying Allyson, who seems to want to take her crappy mood out on everyone in the Bronze tonight. ducky then asks Thoin for a loan of the dingoes, for a little cleaning in the lurkage. Not a fan of the whole High Priestess scenario, but tonight is a very different night, and thus, ducky offers Irene Adler a fresh robe in case she feels the need to perform any cleansing rituals. She then steps up to a specially built podium

I don't know if Penlind, Cairo and Djoser are "real" people any more than the rest of you. All I know is, I read their posts, was moved by them, and felt compelled to act. I told Cairo a couple of jokes that would be acceptable for a ten-year old child, hoping to amuse her in what seemed to be a serious and sad situation. I offered my prayers up for the family, as many other Bronzers did. What I am thinking is, does it matter so much if they were "real" or not? They made a lot of people stop thinking about their own personal, petty, trifling problems for a few minutes and instead show concern and compassion for a sick two year old child and a family that was afraid that they might lose him. As far as this ducky is concerned, the time was well spent. If it was a hoax, I like to think that whatever deity you believe in is smart enough to know and direct the energy to someone that needs it. So, either way, it was a win/win scenario for someone.

Okay, anyone else want to take a turn at the podium before Allyson tries to light it afire?

Since WHEN are we a pluralistic society??? I haven't noticed it lately, in any case.

I don't think that they explained ( this year) until after the fact that the online poll and the magazine article would be completely separate and unrelated.

paksenarrion:

Grrrrrr indeed. I was taken in too. It would be nice if winning the poll would get James M. noticed by the magazine at least. I didn't ever draw it all back to the twin Xander episode from this season. That's actually kind of interesting. We must accept the bad in ourselves to take advantage of the good...which would be especially significant for Buffy, with the Dracula conversation you mentioned. All very interesting. I'm really looking forward to the end of this season...I'm completely unspoiled, so don't post any spoilers to me if you know of them, but I think I'll keep this topic in mind and revisit it once the season has concluded.

Just as Irene Adler is about to go ballistic, Thoin grabs her shoulders and gently restrains the Bronze Priestess. She gently removes the Bronze Flame from the trash and sets it upright on its base again. Then she simply steps back and waits. There is a soft sputtering, a few flickers of slight sparks, a small sizzle and then the flame is back again, small at first, but gradually growing brighter and brighter. Thoin gives her daughterlet a quick hug...

Irene Adler, see? Even THAT cold misery could not extinguish this flame. Trust it to burn. It knows how.

I think the single episode that has set the tone for this season is "The Replacement." In that episode, Xander is attacked by a demon that splits his identity in two: one Xander is calm, mannered, strong, intelligent while the other is erratic, clumsy, weak and somewhat dumb. The message is that Xander is both of these personalities in one single identity.

Now, we see that some the other characters on Buffy experience the same dilEmma. Ben, as a mortal whose body is periodically used as a vessel by demon hellgod Glory, is both Ben and Glory. He is puppet and puppetmaster. Likewise, Dawn is both a 14-year-old girl and The KEY, a mysterious entryway to a netherworld dimension and some say the only way to save humankind. There have been other instances as well throughout the history of the series - Oz as both human and werewolf, Angel as both good and evil, but I think that there's another example right under our noses and that's Willow/Tara.

It wasn't until this week's episode, "Tough Love," that I really began to see the value of Tara's character as exemplar of Willow's prior self. Like Tara, Willow was once shy and reserved, with an active internal life superior to any interactions with friends and others. Her witchcraft was more hobby than study, and - most obviously - she dated men. Now, Willow is forthright and bold, and this week wielded her witchcraft as a weapon against Glory.

In her conversation with Willow, Tara expressed fright at how much Willow is changing week-to-week. And when Willow mentioned that she didn't understand because her mother hadn't died, I couldn't help but ask the screen: didn't she? "Gingerbread" is the only episode in which we've seen Mrs. Rosenberg and the series has made clear she is not very active in Willow's life. My point is that Tara is a mirror of Willow and expresses - yet again - the duality of character.

In "Buffy vs. Dracula," Buffy was outraged that Dracula described her as a killer. But she is. She is both savior and slayer and I have a feeling that we are going to have to see one to understand the other in the finale.

That's all, thank you. :-)

Thoin signals the bartender to put a vanilla latte on her tab for Spike's Girl, then she settles down to cuddling little Shaggie, who is peaceful and calm, a darling new presence...

Spike's Girl, thank you! He's marvelous, isn't he? I'm sure the other Fifths are going to just love him to pieces. I know I will.

W-SKy, it's going oddly tonight, but I refuse to get cranky about it. How are you this evening, though?

Irene Adler, I like that. As a mantra, it works. I believe. Beats heck out of that X-Flies silliness. Short, simple, declarative. I can live with it.

Time for Mia's two cents

I too had thought, on many occasions, that the posting done by Penlind & Cairo could be fake. I didn't want to believe it, but it is part of my nature. It is the way I am. It is HARD to earn my trust. My heart aches at the possibility that someone, anyone would take a child and use such a terrible thing *especially since my Goddaughter is sick as well* to gain attention, respect or anything else that may come out of this for them. Did I pray? Yes. Did I wish? Yes. Did I hope? Yes. None of that was in vein. If anything I am a better person for it. It shows our heart. If this is indeed a hoax, brilliantly set up to make us look the fools, it won't work. We did nothing to be embarassed or ashamed about. We are human, and when a child is sick, we want to help. That shows how heartfelt we are, not how gulable. I hope with all my heart that what has gone on is for real I mean, if it is real I wouldn't want Djo to be sick, but you understand. No matter what. This shows that the Bronze is full of people who can love, and support and I personally admire everyone of you.

Isn't Colin Firth adorable? I've loved him since Pride and Prejudice. There are lovely pictures of him in this week's issue of People magazine, in their 50 Most Beautiful People special.
Sadly, even though James M. won the on line pole, he's not even included in the magazine version.

paksenarrion:

I heard that rumor about Anya too, but I really don't know what to believe at this point. But I do suspect the PTB's have had something to do with Spike's good behavior, even if they haven't given him a soul. Remember in Season 4, Giles made a very foreshadowy statement to Spike, something like "Have you ever considered that this may have happened to you for a reason?" Wise, wise Giles. I think he was right. I think that the PTBs made him "good" to save the world from Glory.
